What is an Outplacement Service?

There are two broadly accepted approaches to outplacement:
Remote; access to websites and call centres. Good for the provider (high margin), good for employer (low cost), virtually useless for the employee as it doesn’t provide counselling.

Personal; group sessions; Good for the provider (high margin), good for employer (low cost), virtually useless for the employee as it doesn’t provide counselling as it is not individually focused.

Personal one-on-one counselling. We provide One on One consulting: the most appropriate and individually focussed assistance which has two manifestations;

  • Seeking a similar job; requires resume, interview and job search advice. This approach is good if the consultant is a trained counsellor and can assist with the shock and blow to self-esteem that occurs with retrenchment as well as provide the self awareness advice on choosing suitable work environments and the tactical advice along with connections to and a deep understanding of the world of work. This is the Nine Lives Consulting approach.
  • “Where to from here?”, meaning the employee may take a different career path, This is the Nine Lives Consulting specialty. This approach requires high quality counselling (to assist overcoming the shock of retrenchment and rebuild self-esteem and confidence to go in a new direction), along with all the tactical information, connections to and a deep understanding of the world of work.

Services For Sponsors

The area of Outplacement is rife with business risks. At the end of the day, the best case scenario is that individuals are in roles that suit them and in an environment where they can thrive. Over three decades, we’ve seen plenty of programs that backfired or didn’t deliver anticipated results due to an incomplete methodology, and plenty that have gone well so we’ve designed programs that ensure organisations and individuals gain. Our Career Navigator Outplacement Programs focus on articulating personal attributes, identifying potential roles, preparing resumes, conducting interview preparation, planning job search and personal coaching throughout the whole process. Our planning process is outlined below:

Our Process

Planning

When one or more retrenchments or redeployments are being considered, it is extremely important to manage the whole process carefully, with consideration for all parties, including the remaining staff, and ensure all aspects and questions that may arise are thought about and responses have been prepared.

Nine lives Consulting has over 20 years’ experience in retrenchment planning and can provide impartial advice on all the processes and alert your team to a potential pitfalls.
Nine Lives Consulting service includes:

  • A checklist of all the issues and potential traps for errors.
  • Participation in planning activities.
  • Recommendations on suitable support programs.
  • Manager training in notification. Many managers are asked to implement others restructure plans withoutadequate training on how to handle the notification meeting

With simple training and understanding of the forces at play, a humane, considerate process can be conducted that meets the needs of the Notifying manager, the remaining staff and the recipient.

Training can be in two formats:

  • Group
  • Individual.
Business Continuity: Seminars

Most organisations need to maintain momentum while restructuring, the most effective way is to keep all the staff informed on developments and likely outcomes so that staff and their families are mentally prepared for the bad news.
Providing information on reasons for the changes as well as how it impacts people’s emotions and performance will enable the team to cope better with the impending changes and maintain productivity.

Nine Lives Consulting typically creates a bespoke set of discussions that include:

  • Preparation for departure
  • Checklists of Dos & Don’ts for job search
  • Managing your team while waiting for change
Notification Day support.
A properly organised notification day is critical to a smooth transition and having NLC consultants on site to meet with each employee after their notification is a very important physical and mental handover point where the employee can begin to focus on their future and let go of the past.
These meetings can be conducted either:

  • Onsite
  • by telephone
Redeployment

Often redundant positions threaten to diminish the organisation’s know-how and redeployment is a very effective way to retain that knowledge. Usually redeployed personnel are required to apply for other roles and hence need to be armed with clarity about their commercial offer, aspirations and resume and interview preparation.
Nine Lives Consultants assist such employees to prepare for this process but also conduct a reality check on whether seeking another internal role is in their best interests.
Nine Lives Consulting can:

  • Prepare employees to apply for internal roles
  • Review employee’s ambitions and performance to assist sensible strategies being employed.
Partner Relocation Support
When you are moving key staff to new locations or repatriating them back to Australia, there is often a complication with the transition due to the disruption to their partner’s career or employment.
If their partner is not recieving internal transfer support, then providing some basic Job Search advice and support to them can minimise the distractions and trauma that can be generated when the partner is not assisted. Nine Lives Consulting recommends the Job Search Basics program for this purpose, but in some special.cases, more complex support may be warranted.
Talent Pool

We maintain close relationships with some key high quality General and Executive Search Recruiters whom often request suitable candidates for particular roles. NLC only provides such contacts for a known proposition and with the candidate’s full knowledge and agreement.
